Your chatty wee one will have your ears ringing from morning 'til night! A chatty child finds it easy to let you know how they feel – they’re never lost for words. It’s no wonder they’re talking so much– by the age of 3, childrens language skills are already 50% developed. It’s also proven that children talk more when they’re talked to.
At just 20 months, children with parents who talk to them regularly (even if it’s just about what’s for dinner!) know 131 more words than children who don’t hear as much chat at home. By the age of 2 that goes up to 295 more words - so keep on talking! It helps them to learn to talk, boosts their brain power and gives them all the confidence they’ll need to make friends. Their playmates might struggle to get a word in edgeways, though!
You can help them learn the art of conversation by listening to them when they’ve got something to say, and asking them to do the same when you talk, too. That way everyone gets a turn. See our Talking Tips for helpful hints on talking and listening to your wee one. |
